A peaceful fishing town hidden in the Cabo region

Los Barriles (East Cape North)

A peaceful fishing town hidden in the Cabo region

Welcome to Los Barriles

A desert tucked away on the east coast of California Baja Sur, Los Barriles is bookended by rocky shores to the Pacific and the expansive, sandy beaches bordering the Sea of Cortez. A quaint, serene town perfect for any retirement or vacation, Los Barriles has vast history and appeal.
Named “Los Barriles” because of a local legend surrounding buried treasure in barrels, Los Barriles is brimming with local history. A revolving door of missionaries and settlers left behind a trail of historic rustic colonial buildings. Like much of the Cabo region, Los Barriles was left relatively untouched until road development put the entire region on the map.
Today, Los Barriles offers outstanding weather, cultural relevance, and a reprieve from the tourist-heavy metropolitan Cabo areas. Dotted with a wide range of architectural styles, Los Barriles offers visitors or homeowners a place that suits them, whether that be contemporary, Spanish Colonial, Mission, or even mid-century modern. A premier destination for any fisherman or traveler looking to escape the city, it still enjoys a choice location as it sits halfway between La Paz and Cabo San Lucas.

What to Love

  • Rustic, communal atmosphere
  • Historic downtown and access to local beaches
  • An unparalleled fly fishing scene

People and Lifestyle

With a quiet population of fewer than 5,000, Los Barriles is known for its relaxed, laid-back way of life. Due to industries such as wind sports, fishing, and tourism, Los Barriles draws a significant population of ex-pats and has a widely English-speaking population. Thanks to the rural vibes, history, and culture the city has to offer, Los Barriles has a wealth of opportunities for excursions.

Dining, Shopping, and Entertainment

The nostalgic city of Los Barriles might have a reputation for having a leisurely pace of life, but that in no way means there’s nothing to do. Charming and historic, the streets and beaches of Los Barriles are packed with eateries, boutiques, culturally relevant experiences, and more.
At the heart of Los Barriles is its cultural and historical center, the Town Square. While this town is off the beaten path, you wouldn’t know it from the compact city center, which is flush with taquerias such as the family-friendly Taqueria El Viejo and shopping opportunities like the Salt and Cotton Eco-Boutique, a shop for sustainable women’s fashion.
Other than the city center, there’s La Casita Restaurant Bar, which offers first-rate Mexican fare, and the Hotel Palmas de Cortez, a part of the Vanwormer Resort, which hosts restaurants, events, and more. There’s even Tio Pablo Taqueria, one of the oldest and most popular taquerias in the area. If you’re looking for an incredible vista to accompany your meal, try the La Playa Restaurant and Bar right on the beach.

Things to Do

The city and surrounding areas are absolutely brimming with activities, both outdoor and indoor.
Every year is a year to celebrate in Los Barriles, thanks in no small part to the Festival of Arts at Hotel Palmas de Cortez. Visit the festival for excellent food, beer gardens, and traditional art in a plethora of mediums, from pottery to fabric to watercolor. If fishing is more your speed, you’re in luck because there are numerous fishing events, such as the International Roosterfish Tournament, held at Los Barriles.
Take a short drive over to ExotiKite Kiteboarding to take advantage of one of Los Barriles’ most iconic pursuits: kiting. Or head to any one of the area's myriad beaches, which are often accented by kites and other colorful scenery from the windsurfing and sailboarding people love to partake in.
